Giving medications and herbs orally
Dosing & Drenching

By far, one of the most useful tools I have on hand in the barn is my Drenching Syringe/Feeding Syringe. This is really nice for giving medications, herbal tinctures, herbal powders & wormers (mixed with liquid) orally. It has a metal nozzle which is a must for getting past those sharp goat back teeth. If you have goat, you need to get one of these.

To use, stick the metal nozzle into the side of the goat's mouth, and back just a little further than the back teeth. You need to stick it in far enough, but not so far you jam it down their throat.

I use a 30 ml version of this syringe. Here are places it can be ordered. Each supplier gives it different names, but it is the exact same thing. (Links for referance. I get no "kickback")

Administering herbal powders (such as Molly's Herbal Worm Formula):

I prepare only the amount I need at a time (to not make up powdered dry herbs ahead of time and store). To prepare herbal powders, mix the required amount of powder with enough liquid so that is can be sucked up into the syringe. I usually mix it in a small "dixie cup". I have these on hand because I use them as teat dip cups. I find you need about 1 1/2 times liquid to powder, but there is no set right and wrong, just add as much liquid as you need. I will often put a dose of Immune Support Tincture in the powder and then add enough water to make it liquid. You will need to keep stirring the mixture as you suck it up into the syringe. I use the feeding tube on the syringe to do my stirring.
